Activated Carbon

Activated Carbon

Activated Carbon is made from carbonaceous materials such as coconuts, coal, and wood, later refined by highly advanced technology. The main component used to create it is any natural product with high carbon content. It is produced to achieve a large internal surface that makes it ideal for adsorption and can be combined with certain chemicals to enhance its properties.

The carbon material should have pore sizes larger than its adsorbing material. The removed molecules will be held in the carbon’s pore structure. This adsorption process will aid the carbon in reducing toxic gases, activate chemical reactions, and be a carrier of biomass and chemicals. Activated Carbon is an excellent adsorbent for purifying air, water, and gases and controlling odour. It is a cost-effective way to treat a high volume of gas or water with a low contaminant concentration due to its large surface area of 800 to 1,200 m² per gram.

Application
  • Gas Purification

Activated Carbon is usually used in compressed air and gas purification to remove hydrocarbons from the air. The large charcoal beds adsorb these gases and retain them as they rapidly decay. The solids are trapped in the charcoal particles while the filtered air passes through.

  • Chemical Purification

Activated Carbon is used to purify solutions of organic molecules containing unwanted impurities. Large-scale chemical and pharmaceutical processes use filtration over the carbon for the same purpose. The carbon is mixed with the solution and filtered off or with the filter.

  • Environmental

Activated Carbon has many applications in removing pollutants from air and water streams on the field and in industrial processes such as air purification and drinking water filtration. It is effective in water treatment as carbon is multi-functional.

  • Can be used in both food productions and industrial processes
